3DCreative Issue 86 – October 2012
English | PDF | 98 pages | 40 MB

Welcome to the 3DCreative Magazine Issue 86 October 2012! I hope you are ready to be inspired this month, as we are fit to burst with brand new tutorial series for you to get stuck into!

Let’s get started with this issue's stunning cover by Daniel Bystedt, which is the first installment to brand new tutorial series: ZBrush Quadrapeds. ZBrush is an impressive piece of software that can accomplish so much. With endless possibilities, your imagination is the limit. In this series our brilliant artists have been given complete creative freedom to show us how to create the organic forms of their quadrapeds, and Daniel is the first to get the ball rolling!

Talking of new tutorial series, the second one starting this month is based on the awesome 2D concept created by talented 2D artist Ling Yun. Futuristic vehicles are a popular subject matter amongst CG artists and a high proportion of the potential jobs that you can do in 3D require you to be able to create an accurate model using a 2D concept. In this series our two artists will be using the 2D concept and technical drawings provided, to talk us through a step-by-step guide to turning this information into an accurate and exciting 3D model. Arturo Garcia starts us off in 3ds Max, while Renato Gonzalez Aguilante uses Maya.

Andrew Finch continues to guide us through the Unreal Games Engine tutorial series, using programs such as 3ds Max, Photoshop and UDK to create a playable game level. Last time we saw Andrew begin finalizing the environment by placing temporary materials on the walls and floors. In this chapter he continues to finalize the environment, this time demonstrating how to place the final materials and correctly UV map them to the surface.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen artist circumstances, we are unable to bring you the last installment in the Building Droids series. However we have provided Ignacio Bazan Lazcano’s 2D concept and technical drawings, so you can still have a go at recreating this awesome bar tender droid with the techniques you have learnt in previous chapters of the series.

As a one-off this month we bring you Texturing and Lighting in Photoshop by the brilliant Aleksander Jovanovic. In this detailed tutorial Aleksander demonstrates how he used Photoshop to apply color to his un-textured render, in this diverse scene full of different colored items made from different materials to demonstrate the power and flexibility of Photoshop. Not only does he use Photoshop to resolve the textures, but he also shows how to add lighting to complete the dramatic and creepy scene. If you enjoy this tutorial, be sure to check out Photoshop for 3D Artists in the 3DTotal shop for more tutorials like this one.

If all that wasn’t exciting enough, we also have an interview with talented concept artist Gregory Callahan, a thought-provoking Making Of by Francesc Camós, and our usual stunning gallery featuring work by Bruno Melo, Jorge Lopes, Mauricio Alves Salgueiro and many more!

3DCreative Magazine! This month we continue some of our great tutorials, as well as starting an exciting new one. With this selection of inspiring tutorials, a fascinating interview, and another skillful Making Of, you won’t know where to start.
Let’s kick things off with the brilliant cover image, which is part of our building droids series. We provided Victoria Passariello with a 2D concept and technical drawings and she shows us how to build an accurate 3D model of her very useful repair droid. Continuing our tutorial series covering FX, Particles and Dynamics, Matt Chandler and Mike Zugschwert demonstrate how to create an atmospheric snowfall. With Matt working in 3ds Max, he shows us how to achieve this by using particle flow and a number of standard space warp modifiers, whilst Mike shows us how simple making snow can be with Maya particles, by demonstrating the use of nParticles with a volume axis field and a 3D fluid container.

As we progress further into our character production series, which focuses on the modeling of an old man’s head, things are really being to take shape. So far our talented artists have covered concept creation, detailing and all the necessary preparations for texturing and shading. This time around Rodrigue Pralier and Anto Juricic move on to the actual texturing and shading, and look at using Displacement maps and photographic referencing to create realistic skin, Rodrigue using 3ds Max and Anto using Maya.

Editorial
Well the festive season is here. I presume you are all busy preparing for Christmas, running around the shops finding the best deals you can and wrapping your gifts. Well perhaps you can spare a few moments to take a good look at this month’s magazine which is riddled with treats and stunning tutorials.

This month’s magazine see’s the introduction of two new amazing tutorial series. The first series we will discuss is the series that has provided this month’s cover image. Topology is a fundamental subject of 3D. If you want to be able to animate and manipulate your model you need to be working with clean topology. In this series Diego Maia will be showing us how to create clean topology and how to clean it up if your model requires it. In this issue he starts with an introduction to topology and shows us how to handle topology in some of the trickier areas.

3DCreative Magazine Issue 76 December 2011
The second of our new series introduced this month is quite different. Many of you will remember the excellent tutorials that have been created by Andrzej Sykut for us in the past. In this issue Andrzej is back to share a new technique with us. Andrzej will be showing us how to mix 3D with photography, using one of the trickiest subject matters to do this, the human body. By creating 3D mechanical parts and adding them to his photographs, Andrzej will be showing us how to create stunningly realistic Cyborgs.

This month’s issue contains the final chapter in our Cartoon animal series which has been a real treat. The series will be wrapped up by Igor Catto who will be showing us how to create a cool sloth. Don’t ask me why the sloth is swinging a bunny around his head, but it makes me laugh every time I look at it. Next month we will be starting an amazing new series about Sculpting Armored Beasts in ZBrush, you are going to love it!

In our SwordMaster Series Gavin Goulden is back and in this issue will be showing us how to turn our high poly sculpt into a games ready low-poly character. I hope you are enjoying this series and are following it step by step. I look forward to seeing all of your low poly characters when the series has finished.

In this month’s interview we have caught up with Brazilian sculpter Mariano Steiner. Mariano is an amazing talented artist so you will love looking at his cool sculpts and images. Equally cool this month is our Making Of, which features the work of Raphael Boyon, who shows us how he created his cool image of a jester.
As well as amazing tutorials this issue features stunning work by the likes of Nikita Volobuev, Jose Alves da Silva, Bertrand Benoit and many more talented artists

Editorial
Well I hope you all had a great Halloween and have been enjoying munching your way through all your treats, or still laughing about your tricks. November is here, the nights are darker and firework season is upon us. There is no need for us to wait until the 5th of November to get things off to a bang though, simply flick through this month’s explosive magazine!

Our cartoon animals series has been great so far, with many of the fantastic images making their way onto the cover of the magazine. This month’s cartoon animal is no exception. Borislav Kechashki uses both 3ds Max and ZBrush as he talks us through the creation of his stunning cartoon Scorpion. This is a great little tutorial that covers a little bit of everything, so if you are thinking about starting a new project this would be a great starting point.

I hope you all enjoyed the first chapter of our new Swordmaster series. If you missed the first chapter, make sure you pick up last month’s months magazine so you can follow the latest installment where Gavin Goulden will be talking us through the sculpting process. This is a really great series made up of step by step instructions that if followed to the letter will ensure that you to make a stunning games character.

I don’t know about you but I have been really enjoying Dhilip Somesh’s Futuristic Vehicles tutorial series. Making the most of both 3ds Max and Photoshop Dhilip has been showing us how to make stunning stills of Futuristic Vehicles. In this issue he will be turning his attention to a big, bulky, dirty resource collector. This is a great way to get stunning results in a short period of time and is well-worth ago.

I am sure all of you Vue users have been loving Alex Popescu’s stunning insight into the software. Alex has done a great job of talking us through both technical and artistic decisions and in this final chapter of his series he will doing more of the same as he talks us through creating a snowy, mountainous scene. There is no need to be sad though as next month’s we will be replacing this series with a great set of tutorials about Topology.

This month’s interview is with an amazing artist who specializes in the use of Mudbox. Kenichi Nishida tells us a little about how he got into the 3D industry and the techniques he uses in his every day work. From Mudbox sculpting to 3ds Max Interiors our interview and Making Of couldn’t be more contrasting. In this month’s Making Of Jacinto Monteiro will be showing us how he created his stunningly realistic image of the library at the University he studied in.

This just leaves us with this month’s gallery which (as always) is full to the brim of some of best of the current 3D artwork in the community. This month’s gallery features work from Mathias Herbster, Francesco Corvino, Jin Hee Lee and many more amazing artists

Editorial
Every now and then a magazine stands out as being particularly good. That is not to say that there is ever a bad issue, but this month’s 3Dcreative is truly outstanding.

I am going to start by talking about something really exciting. Many of you will have been reading our magazine for years now and will be more than familiar with our Swordmaster series which was originally in the magazine in 2006. In fact for many of you following the Swordmaster series may have been your first attempt at 3D. Well the Swordmaster has been updated and is back better than ever! Ignacio Bazan Lazcano has created some stunning concept work for our new character which has been handed to the outrageously talented Gavin Goulden. Gavin will be talking us through turning the concept art into 3D games characters ready for action! Gavin will be handling the series in both 3ds Max and Maya, and will provide step by step instructions for everything that he does. Gavin will also be sharing tips which he has picked up from years in the CG industry, that you can’t put a price on. This really is a great series worth following so I hope you enjoy it. I look forward to seeing all of your games characters.

Last month we started the new series about creating futuristic vehicles. This is a really interesting series which encourages you to use 3D to create stunning 2D visuals. Using 3D as a base Dhilip Somesh talks us through how to use Photoshop to add the detail and color to your images with jaw dropping results. In this issue Dhilip shows us how to make a cool sci-fi racer which he has called the Vectromer.

Our cartoon animal’s series has been a lot of fun and the final images have been great and this month’s cartoon animal is no exception. In this issue we venture the deeps to see how Luis Arigaza Rico created his cool cartoon Squid.

Alex Popescu has been doing an amazing job of talking us through how to create stunning visuals using Vue. Alex has created some stunning images as well as giving us great advice as to how we can do the same. In this issue Alex talks us through creating an epic underwater cave and shows us how he brings all of the elements together to make a cave look as daunting and impressive as it would in the real world.

This month’s interview gives us an opportunity to learn a little about a great and very interesting artist by the name of Victor Hugo. Victor has submitted some brilliant images to the 3DTotal galleries recently so we thought we would catch up with him and find out a little about him. Victor has been great at answering our questions and even tells us about one of the funny answers he gave in his first interview for a CG job.

This month’s making of is by Gun Phil Park who tells us how he captured the essence of Jimi Hendrix in his image the Guitarist. We also have a stunning gallery featuring work by Eugenio Garcia, Caio César, Andrew Hickinbottom and Igor Kudryavtsev. I am sure you will agree with me, this is a really good on
